The Dashboard Cameras in Commercial Vehicles Act received Royal Assent on May 28, 2026. Its requirements commence by regulation, rather than automatically six months later. Check BC Laws for subsequent changes before relying on this summary.
Requirements described in the third-reading text
- Commercial vehicles as defined in the Commercial Transport Act with a GVWR over 11,793 kg.
- Forward road recording through the windshield; this text does not require a driver-facing camera.
- At least 72 hours retained, minimum 1080p, night vision and recording at manufacturer default settings to local device storage.
- Installation and maintenance by the owner, or lessee for leased vehicles; recording during operation, subject to regulations, with an unobstructed view.
- Handling recordings under applicable privacy and security requirements, including BC’s Personal Information Protection Act.
Before choosing a system, review the vehicle, installation and actual recording retention. Storage capacity alone does not establish 72-hour retention at the required settings.
